If you look at a typical Chinese metropolis, you will see scores, perhaps 100s, of cranes setting up skyscrapers. The primary element in the development of such buildings is steel. Steel structures are the spine of each city.
Prior to the cranes showing up, the building must be drafted. This is where steel structure detailing comes into play. Structural detailing design is critical to the safety of those who live in and around a building, and indeed the safety of those actually erecting the building. A huge amount of planning is necessary in order to gratify safety regulations while fulfilling all the specifications the client and architect have set.
A steel detail designer must know about pressure and force - allowing the building to yield to external pressures, and when to remain firm agains such forces, to maximize the unity of the building. A structure also has to resist great weights, and so this must also be taken into account. From snow weight to wind speed, a steel structure detailer must take into account all kinds of external pressures.
Nowadays, there’s a greater need for creative building designs, which means the detailer can frequently be forced to accept tricky designs and seek to render them into a secure working space for thousands of people.
Still, it’s not all bad for the detailer - software like Tekla Steel, AutoCad and Asteel have helped accelerate the procedure of detailing and drafting large buildings.
