It is important to understand that while face lift surgery, technically called rhytidectomy is a highly effective way to postpone the appearance of the visible signs of aging for many years, it is not permanent. There is no known way to completely eliminate the signs of aging forever. They can be delayed and minimized, however and proper skin care and maintaining your health through proper exercise and diet can help a great deal.

You should also realize that a face lift is major surgery. It is an invasive procedure that involves cutting, separation and manipulation of tissues, and a fair amount of discomfort, both immediately after the surgery and during the recovery process which may last for up to a year. In addition, there is the risk of complications; although these are very slight, the chances are not zero.

If you are in good overall health both physically and emotionally and maintain a reasonably active, healthy lifestyle, you are a good candidate for rhytidectomy. This includes abstinence from all forms of tobacco, moderate consumption of alcohol and avoiding too much time in direct sunlight (these factors can cause rapid aging).

At your first appointment, your doctor will perform a full physical examination and ask you for a complete medical history that includes previous surgeries, major illnesses, and any prescription or over-the-counter medications you are taking (including herbal and mineral supplements).

The doctor will also be interested in your reasons for seeking a face lift procedure, and what your expectations are. S/he will discuss all available options with you, including some of the non-surgical options that include heat and laser treatments as well as collagen replacement therapy.

It will be important for you to understand all the implications, risks and possible complications of rhytidectomy. The risks are minimal, but as is the case with any kind of invasive surgery, they are present.

Once you are made thoroughly aware of all of your options and the doctor is certain that you are in good overall physical and psychological health and have realistic expectations of the surgery, the two of you can begin planning for the actual procedure in terms of your goals and specific areas you wish to have addressed. The doctor will take measurements and pictures in preparation, and your actual surgery will be scheduled.
