Stress in the workplace has been considered quite a burdensome global phenomenon. However, usually no attention is paid to the stress faced by workers of charity organisations and those in the in non-profit sector.
Workers’ union Unite launched a one-year long program on International Workers’ Memorial Day in order to remove stress from the workplace. It decided to find out more about stress levels among the non-profit sector workers by conducting a survey of at least two and a half thousand workers in the sector.
This has been prompted by a recent Unite research that found that almost all of the workers in the sector are stressed about their financial security as the charities have found it hard to get donations.
Unite’s goals are to understand the stress levels among employees, help and encourage the employers to manage the stress level, ensure that best practice policies are in place in order to reduce stress, and make sure that these policies are implemented by the employers.
According to Rachael Maskell, Unite National Officer, Not for Profit Sector, stress in the workplace can be in any sector, any place and any one can suffer from it.
This study will lead to a national conference possibly in November in which the delegates will discuss ways of reducing stress in the non-profit sector.
